Previous comment resulted in 500 and missing markup. Trying again.

My thoughts on web pub sub and combining just 2 together, twitter and IM.

I can see both sides as far as identity provider == messaging routing provider. However, it's a pretty good fit since it changes sender-defined messaging to recipient-defined messaging. This puts the recipient in charge of their delivery identity in the same way OpenID puts them in charge of their login and posting identity. Check out my blog for a more in depth explanation of this link (also, some ugly diagrams.)

Again, what the messaging provider chooses to do is entirely up to them. Email-only is a very valid option, or farm it out to a third party - it doesn't really matter.

It could conceivably also be delegated like OpenID is now so if you had a preferred service for messaging but wanted a different OpenID provider you could hook that up.

It's an interesting idea, but it puts identity providers into the role of messaging system adminstrators. I'm sure Microsoft and Yahoo would love that, but do Vidoop and JanRain and Automattic want to manage messaging? Maybe they do. All your text are belong to us, and such.

I like the idea, but I'm not sure that identity provider should == messaging infrastructure provider. On the other hand, a flexible messaging provider that integrated with an identity provider would be lovely.

Have you seen the company specific Facebook clones that are increasing in popularity? They are a really powerful tool for increasing intra-company communication and team building.

For example, Hot Topic uses a Facebook clone that is only for their employees. Since their retail employees are very similar to and in-touch with their customers, they know what customers will buy. A designer (or any other employee) might post a poll to their profile with an idea like "spiked neon-colored belts" that all employees can then vote their opinion on.

The reason the network is successful is that their employees are fairly homogeneous and this tool can be used both for fun and social networking. The employees use the tool because it puts them in closer contact with each other and helps them have a say in the products they will sell and the promotions they will use. The company uses this tool to increase the number internal innovations and to accelerate the learning of what works and what doesn't across the entire company.

I'm in an MBA program and one of the projects we worked on was the marketing section of a location-aware concept. As users of Apple's iPhone Maps application are aware, a cell phone signal can be used to triangulate your rough position, a sort of pseudo-GPS. The concept we were working on was tying this information in to an advertising network. This would require fairly constant position updates and a higher level of resolution than is currently available.

The purpose was to serve ads to users of ad-sponsored cell phones that were relevant to the current local. For example, if someone happens to walking near a doughnut shop, their cellphone would be sent a text message coupon that offered a discount at that particular location. Hopefully, this would increase the success rate of the ad since it would be both time and locationally relevant to the consumer. It's a rather frightening concept though and makes me think of cyberpunk dystopias a la Transmetropolitan.

That's a great quote from Jyri. I must have read that at some point -- but I certainly hadn't remembered it when I wrote my post!

I'm thinking about location now as a layer in DiSo, or as just another profile field that you do joins on... just like your favorite movies or books in your Flickr account... or any number of profile items in your Facebook account.

And, what can we do with virtual location? Or fake places? I remember that someone, upon signing up for Brightkite, checked into cities across the world, just to prove that, actually, Brightkite has NO IDEA where he really was...! Nonetheless, there are benefits to be gained from applying location to social applications... like you, I'm just as excited! ;)

I have a Facebook profile. When folks add me, and I know them, I add them back.

Other than adding people I know, I do precisely one thing on Facebook. I play Scrabulous.

If there were some other utility or function on the site that provided me some value, well, I'd use it.

I would love to make it easier to do semantic markup in Django. One of the first things (not directly related to Django) that I've been thinking about is making a Python extension for Markdown to allow for easy rel-* use.

...and it's now hAtom'd up. The converted feed seems to be mostly working, which is nifty. Individual pages will also push out comment feeds, though I'm not entirely sure the markup is as appropriate as it should be.

That javascript you described is one of the beginning pieces of the DiSo plugins for WordPress -- though not through JS, through hcard import. ;)

We'll have to talk about this stuff if you're building it manually with Django! ;)

And, I see your hcard now -- excellent!

Wouldn't it be nice if I could just get a bit of javascript from my Vidoop profile page to insert the hCard wherever? I don't really want to replicate the data.

I'm doing a bit of rel-me, especially on the sidebar.

hAtom, though. I'll get right on that.
